Drywall Repair in Sacramento: what to expect

There are really two different jobs here depending on when the house was built. Tract housing from the 1960s onward is standard drywall finished with orange peel or knockdown texture, which can be matched closely. Pre-war homes in Midtown, East Sacramento and Land Park often have lath-and-plaster instead. Plaster crumbles at the edges of a hole, patches have to be keyed in rather than simply filled, and a crack that follows a settlement line will return within a season if it is only skimmed over.
The part people underestimate is texture. A patch can be structurally perfect and still be visible under raking light until it is painted — and even then, matched texture under fresh paint will show against a wall painted five years ago, because the surrounding paint has aged. Original builder touch-up paint makes more difference to the final result than anything else.
Popcorn ceilings in homes built before about 1980 may contain asbestos and should be tested before being disturbed.

Not part of a patch quote, though it can be quoted separately. An unpainted patch is always visible. Original wall paint blends far better than a fresh can of the same shade, because the surrounding paint has aged.
Compound has to dry fully between coats and before paint. In this climate that is usually overnight, longer in winter or a cold room. Dry to the touch and ready to paint are not the same thing.
Orange peel and knockdown, closely. Hand-troweled and custom textures are considerably harder, and the realistic result is worth discussing before work starts rather than after.
