A large share of the housing east of downtown, through Citrus Heights, Arden-Arcade and older parts of Rancho Cordova, dates from the 1950s to the 1980s, and two findings come up constantly. The first is ungrounded two-prong outlets. Where no ground wire exists, the code-recognized fix is a GFCI receptacle labeled "No Equipment Ground" — that provides genuine shock protection, whereas simply fitting a three-prong outlet only makes it look grounded. The second is missing GFCI protection: current code calls for it at kitchens, bathrooms, garages, laundry areas and exterior outlets, and much of this housing predates that requirement.
Homes from roughly 1965 to 1973 may also have aluminum branch wiring. It is not inherently dangerous, but it must be terminated with AL-rated devices or approved connectors; standard devices on aluminum are a real fire risk.
Work that goes beyond replacing an existing device — new circuits, panel changes, rewiring — falls to a licensed electrician.
